How Can You Avoid Workplace Injuries?

January 23, 2014 by dr.jstrunk@yahoo.com

What Is Ergonomics?

How Can You Avoid Workplace Injuries?

Author: Dr. Pierre Dubois

woman at deskYou’re not doing anything stressful at work. You’re just sitting at your desk in front of a computer screen all day. Yet you come home every night with a backache, headache or sore wrist.

If this describes you, your doctor or chiropractor has probably told you that you need to improve your workplace ergonomics. That’s easy for them to say, but what is ergonomics and how do you improve it?

What Is Ergonomics?

The term ergonomics stems from the Greek words ergon (work) and nomos (laws). According to the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), ergonomics is defined as “the science of fitting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities of the working population.”

Good ergonomics in the workplace is key to maintaining our body’s proper health and function, and it can have a major effect on the quality of our work.

Ergonomics involves the physical stressors in our workplace as well as related environmental factors. For example, physical stressors are any activities that put strain on the bones, joints and muscles. These can involve things such as performing repetitive motions, vibrations, working in awkward positions and actions using excessive force.

Environmental factors that contribute to bad ergonomics include loud noise, bad indoor air quality and improper lighting.

Why Is Workplace Ergonomics Important?

Bad ergonomics can increase the risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system, causing conditions such as carpel tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and neck and back pain, as well as creating a range of other health problems, including sick building syndrome, eyestrain and hearing loss.

However, there are steps you can take to improve your workplace ergonomics that can help reduce health risks.

How Can You Improve Ergonomics?

Cumulative trauma disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis, are caused by repetitive motions such as typing. To prevent this, set up your computer workstation in a way that allows your hands and wrists to be in as neutral a position as possible.

When sitting at your desk, your chair should be at a height where your eyes are level with the top of your computer screen, and your arms are at a 45-degree angle for typing. Ensure that your wrists are not angled up or down or to the left or right.

If your desk is too high to keep your forearms straight, raise the height of your chair and use a footrest to keep your feet from dangling. Your chair should be at a height where your feet are flat on the floor or on a footrest, while keeping your knees just slightly higher than the level of the seat.

The chair should provide some light support to your lower back (use a pillow, if necessary) while allowing you to move freely. The arms of the chair should support your lower arms while letting your upper arms remain close to your torso.

To reduce eyestrain, adjust ambient lighting to diminish glare and adjust the brightness and contrast until your eyes are comfortable reading. If you are working in a noisy area, use earplugs or headphones that cut ambient sound (but not set loud enough to damage your hearing!).

Good ergonomics also involves taking frequent breaks. Move around, get some fresh air and focus your eyes on things at varying distances.

Vertigo and Upper Cervical Chiropractic

January 16, 2014 by dr.jstrunk@yahoo.com

Vertigo (dizziness) is a condition that affects a large percentage of our population. “Vertigo is a feeling that you or your surroundings are moving when there is no actual movement. You may feel as though you are spinning, whirling, falling, or tilting. When you have severe vertigo, you may feel very nauseated or vomit. You may have trouble walking or standing, and you may lose your balance and fall. Vertigo occurs when there is conflict between the signals sent to the brain by various balance- and position-sensing systems of the body. Your brain uses input from four sensory systems to maintain your sense of balance and orientation to your surroundings.” (www.webmd.com)

Common causes of vertigo include:

  • Inner ear disorders, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, or labyrinthitis.
  • Injury to the ear or head.
  • Migraine headaches, which are painful, debilitating headaches that often occur with vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, noise, and smell.
  • Decreased blood flow through the arteries that supply blood to the base of the brain (vertebrobasilar insufficiency).

Some of these disturbances are caused by the atlas being out of alignment. If your atlas, the first vertebrae/bone in your neck and which supports your skull, is out of alignment it structurally causes your head to be off center and this can cause a number of health issues…One of those health issues is vertigo.

The vertebral artery, which supplies blood to your brain, goes through the atlas en route to the brain. If the atlas is out of alignment and you turn your head from side to side, you momentarily block off the blood supply through the vertebral artery. Dizziness can then be brought on by a brief disturbance to that vital blood supply to your brain.

Another causative factor could be irritation to the vestibulocochlear nerve (the 8th cranial
nerve) by the atlas misalignment. This is the same nerve that controls your
sense of balance, the one that makes you seasick. When the atlas vertebra is out of its proper alignment it causes a disturbance at the section of the brain stem where that very nerve has its origin. It is not hard to see how an irritation to that area of the nervous system could produce the symptoms of dizziness. To put it simply, the pathway from the brain to the body (in this case the balance center of the body) is disturbed and can lead to many health issues.

We have had positive results with a number of patients with vertigo by giving a very light and specific adjustment to their atlas vertebrae. Please call us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Strunk AT NO CHARGE to see if he can help with your health concerns!

The choice is yours. Medicate the symptoms and live with the limitations, or see if there is a correctable cause to your dizziness, and live the life you were created to live.

TMJ pain can be alleviated by Upper Cervical Care

January 9, 2014 by dr.jstrunk@yahoo.com

TMJ

“TMJ” or temporomandibular joint, refers to the connecting hinge between the lower jaw (mandible) and skull (temporal bone). TMJ disorders can be quite painful, making it difficult to eat, swallow, and yawn. Problems here can also contribute to headaches and neck pain. The image above depicts the location of this joint. Notice how close the first cervical bone (C1), or atlas, is to the TMJ. Because of this proximity, misalignment of C1 can actually be responsible for TMJ pain.

The delicate relationship between the head and neck changes when atlas loses its normal position. A structural imbalance here restricts joint motion and will apply abnormal amounts of pressure to muscles and ligaments. In some cases, this can impair normal TMJ function.  If your jaw “clicks,” this is an indicator that structural misalignment could be present. (Click here to learn more about Upper Cervical Care.)

Patients with TMJ problems have a variety of dental options for treatment. While all can be effective, they’re not exactly cheap!

Upper Cervical Care won’t be the solution for every case of TMJ disorder, however, this approach is  safe, non-invasive, and affordable. TMJ happens to be a condition that will respond very quickly if chiropractic care is the right choice… It won’t be weeks or months of painful waiting to find out.

If you’ve been struggling with TMJ, and you’re fortunate enough to have an Upper Cervical chiropractor close by, I recommend giving them a call. If you’d like some assistance locating a specialist in your area, I invite you to contact us and we help you.

Facts about Prescription Drugs

November 26, 2013 by dr.jstrunk@yahoo.com

Facts About Prescription Drugs

FACT: Next to marijuana, the most common illegal drugs teens are using
to get high are prescription medications. Teens are turning away
from street drugs and using prescription drugs to get high. Indeed,
new users of prescription drugs have caught up with new users of
marijuana.

FACT: The CDC reports that from 1999 to 2004, unintentional poisoning
death from prescription drugs, sleeping pills, antidepressants and
tranquilizers grew 84 percent to 20,950 deaths, overtaking cocaine
and heroin combined as the leading cause of lethal overdose.

FACT: According to the Journal of the American Medical Association in
1998, a report found that prescription drugs kill about 106,000
Americans each year –  that’s three times as many as are killed by
automobiles – making prescription drug death the fourth leading
killer after heart disease, cancer and stroke.

FACT: In 2005, 2.1 million teens abused prescriptions. Prescription drugs
are the most commonly abused drug among 12 and 13-year-olds.

FACT: The most recent research on deaths in the u.s. due to poisoning
over a five year period (1999- 2004) shows that nearly all poison
deaths in the country are attributed to drugs, and most drug
poisonings result from the abuse of prescription and illegal drugs.
(CDC, 2007)

FACT: Teens are abusing prescription drugs because they believe the myth
that these drugs provide a medically safe high.

FACT: Almost 23 percent of youths who used stimulants non-medically in
the past year experienced a major depressive episode in the past
year compared with 8.1 percent of youths who did not use
stimulants non-medically in that period.

Client Testimonials

"My 10 month old son was suffering from eczema and having trouble breathing for weeks. After a visit with Dr. Strunk I was so relieved to see my son comfortable again. He now is free of eczema and was breathing better almost immediately. My husband even noticed our son was better before I told him we had seen Dr. Strunk! Thank you for helping my baby boy feel good again!"
Veronica S. – Raleigh, NC

"I came to see Dr. Strunk after a family friend recommended him. For more than 5 years, I had severe headaches, back pain and breathing problems and I couldn't find a solution. The headaches were severe enough that they would keep me in bed and unable to function all day. My back and breathing problems were also interfering with my everyday life and limiting my exercise and work routines. I tried several prescription and over the counter medications. They either did not work or just temporarily solved the problem. After several months of care from Dr. Strunk, I feel great! I am no longer on any medications and I rarely have headaches and when I do they do not inhibit my everyday life. I have almost no back pain, shortness of breath or breathing problems. It's amazing that my body is back to normal and I am so thankful to Dr. Strunk for helping me!"
