Did you know that your finger wrinkle under water because….

Have you ever wondered why your finger pads wrinkle when they are exposed to water for a certain time? Scientists thought they had figured out the right answer – osmosis. They thought our fingers absorbed water and that caused the wrinkling process. But they were wrong.

fingerswrinkle

A 2011 study showed that the wrinkling was due to a mechanism triggered by our nervous system. The study also proved that when our fingers wrinkle, it is  easier to grip objects underwater. It means the wrinkling is an evolutionary response to the change of our environment.

In the study the researchers made the participants move dry and wet objects. The catch was that they had to do this first with dry fingers and then with wet and wrinkled ones. Can you guess what the results were? The study showed that moving objects with wrinkled fingers was 12% faster than moving objects with dry fingers.

It looks like our own bodies never cease to amaze us.

THE MOST DANGEROUS THOUGHTS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH…
                                           Which one is yours?

Maybe it will go away…
Are you willing to take that chance?

It comes and goes…Why wait until it is a constant problem?

It’s not that bad!…Compared to what?

It only hurts when I…If your tooth only hurts when you drink something cold, is the problem the cold water or a cavity? Stress is the water and the misalignment is the cavity.

I know what my problem is… What is your solution?

I was told I’ve got to live with it, so I do…Don’t give up on your body or your body will give up on you!

My doctor couldn’t find anything wrong!…Isn’t it time for a different approach?

I’ve been this way for years, why change now?…Doesn’t your body deserve a chance to live rather than just exist?

I don’t want to know!…What you don’t know can hurt you.

It’s because of my age!…You have control over how fast your body ages.

I don’t have any symptoms…Did you know that the first symptom in over 75% of heart disease cases is…a heart attack?

I don’t have the time…If your time is valuable, can you afford being out of commission for weeks or months?

I can’t afford it…You can’t afford not to!

These “thoughts” may potentially be dangerous because they could prevent you from experiencing what millions of others have successfully experienced through chiropractic.

Is There Really Such A Thing As Positive Stress?

October 17, 2013 by dr.jstrunk@yahoo.com

stressAuthor: Dr. Pierre DuBois

Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? When the going gets tough, the optimists among you can take heart – new research that has found that viewing stress positively can be of benefit to both the mind and body.

When the brain perceives stress (either physical or psychological), it reacts by releasing cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine to prepare the body for a “fight or flight” response. Fortunately for us, this response is not triggered in most people today as frequently as it once was or for the same kinds of reasons.

After all, relatively few of us are in life-threatening situations on a regular basis. Today’s “modern” stresses are more likely to be caused by wrestling with the IRS, trying to escape a traffic jam or competing with a coworker for a promotion.

It is interesting to note that stress, in itself, is not necessarily a negative thing. It is how we perceive it that makes it either good or bad for us. This is a hopeful discovery, as most people have only limited control over how much stress they experience. The everyday stresses of modern life are difficult to escape. But if we can train our minds to view them as a challenge rather than a threat, it could actually help to bring about better health.

Scientists from a handful of universities, including Yale University and Columbia University, examined the effects of stress on 300 investment bankers who had just emerged from a round of layoffs (I know it’s difficult to feel bad for the stress of investment bankers, but stay with me here). In the study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, scientists divided the participants into two groups, and tried to alter the perception of half of them to view stress as debilitating and the other half to view it as an enhancement.

The first half of the participants were shown videos of people succumbing to stress. The other half were shown videos of people meeting challenges, such as sports figures accomplishing a difficult goal. The results showed that those who had a more optimistic view of stress had fewer health problems, including headaches and muscle pain, and performed better at work than the pessimistic group. In addition, levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) were lower in those who viewed stress as potentially enhancing.

There is actually a term for positive stress, called eustress, which was coined by endocrinologist Hans Selye in the 1970s. It has been proven that stress in moderation improves cognitive performance and improves memory.

Good stress involves the kind of challenges where we feel that we are in control and are accomplishing something. It boosts the immune system and can improve heart function. So eliminating all stress from our lives is probably not a good idea.

The stress to watch out for is the chronic, long-term emotional stress, which causes stress hormones to remain at persistently high levels, leading to many chronic ailments such as heart disease, high blood pressure and depression.

However, viewing certain stressors as challenges rather than threats can be a positive thing and can help ensure that you have a healthy, satisfying and exciting life.

The “Back” Swing by Dr. James Strunk

October 2, 2013 by dr.jstrunk@yahoo.com

chiro and golf

Many golfers have asked me over the years if golf is bad for their back. This is a difficult question to answer. After all, golf is exercise and exercise is typically good for you right? It all depends on the structures we are utilizing to make the golf swing. Have you ever had an injury that didn’t heal correctly or do you have underlying joint degeneration that could be aggravated by your golf swing? Do you swing the golf club properly?  What kind of shape are you in and do you prepare and strengthen your body to be able to perform a golf swing etc.

As an Upper Cervical Specialist it is my job to make sure that there is not undue pressure on the brainstem and spinal cord. If someone is having pressure on their spinal cord they will not be able to move or function appropriately. This can lead to health problems as well as movement restrictions because the innate intelligence inside the body will guard against any movement that may compromise the neural integrity. We call the Brain and Spinal cord the body’s “information super highway”. If there is a problem with pressure in this area your body will not be able to move appropriately.

In our office, when we eliminate spinal cord pressure, we often see improved ranges of motion and less restriction or pain in problem areas. The procedures we use are painless and don’t require any twisting or popping to make a correction.
Below you will see a before and after xray of a recent patient’s neck. The neck is supposed to have a natural curve in it to allow for dynamic motion and function. This patient went from having a reversed cervical curve (head forward posture) to a more natural curve.

Before and After

before

So to answer the original question: Is golf bad for my back? If the person on the left were to swing a club properly they would probably aggravate the muscles, nerves and joints in their neck and back. If the person on the right were to make the same swing there would be much less stress on their neck and back. Problems like this go undetected very often until it gets bad enough to stop someone from swinging a golf club. It is a good idea to get your spine checked by an upper cervical doctor so you know if your swing is hurting you or not.

Client Testimonials

"My 10 month old son was suffering from eczema and having trouble breathing for weeks. After a visit with Dr. Strunk I was so relieved to see my son comfortable again. He now is free of eczema and was breathing better almost immediately. My husband even noticed our son was better before I told him we had seen Dr. Strunk! Thank you for helping my baby boy feel good again!"
Veronica S. – Raleigh, NC

"I came to see Dr. Strunk after a family friend recommended him. For more than 5 years, I had severe headaches, back pain and breathing problems and I couldn't find a solution. The headaches were severe enough that they would keep me in bed and unable to function all day. My back and breathing problems were also interfering with my everyday life and limiting my exercise and work routines. I tried several prescription and over the counter medications. They either did not work or just temporarily solved the problem. After several months of care from Dr. Strunk, I feel great! I am no longer on any medications and I rarely have headaches and when I do they do not inhibit my everyday life. I have almost no back pain, shortness of breath or breathing problems. It's amazing that my body is back to normal and I am so thankful to Dr. Strunk for helping me!"
